Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to Room 1! As we enter, my students make a daily pledge to themselves about the kind of person they want to grown into. This helps to center themselves and focus on what steps they can take today to make their future more than a dream, but a reality.

Our school is a Title I school serving a largely immigrant Latino population in one of the most densely populated cities west of the Mississippi.

Most of my students' daily experience is to witness family and community members working long hours in manual labor jobs. They are statistically destined to dropout before they complete high school. My challenge is to focus them on aspiring higher and forging a path that may not be familiar. My students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes and expectations of people in our community and be the first college graduates in their families. The majority of my students and their families are struggling to get by. Homelessness, job cuts, hunger, and crowded homes are among the difficulties they face. They are abundantly aware of how money (or the lack thereof) creates real problems. They are how their informed decisions can improve their situation and avoid other pitfalls. With all of this, they are abundantly happy and eager learners.

My Project

To help students understand the importance math plays in our daily lives, I've developed a class economy. A centerpiece to our class community, students apply for class jobs, earn salaries, pay rent and other bills, manage their checkbook and choose to spend or save up for rewards. In this new component, my students will be working together in teams in a Biggest Loser-themed challenge. The activities will be outside where the students will perform different financial tasks to help reduce the team debt amount (weight). Each team will be presented with a different financial scenario and will have to make decisions to get that person's finances back in shape. (Examples, "Couch potato shopper", "Credit card maxed out") Teams will review financial histories of their scenario and visit exercise stations to reduce the financial weight. There, they will complete financial exercises and video record how the exercise leads to success. Tasks: budgeting, reducing debt, saving, etc.

I am replicating Mrs. McCarley's "Financial Literacy: Biggest Loser" project.

With the class economy, I want to expand and add new elements. The Biggest Loser project will show them that math is everywhere, and that financial knowledge is where it impacts us daily and very directly. Our choices dictate our financial well-being. I want my students to be able to use our experiences to learn the tough lessons before they have to learn them the hard way in real life. These experiences are new to them now, but make them proficient in making healthier future money choices.
