Bigger Cart, Better Art!

Help me give my students a better art experience with a larger cart to bring more materials into each classroom. A larger cart will also help my students be able to independently access the materials they need.

My Students

I teach art to middle school students who have special needs, ranging from a variety of cognitive disabilities to students who experience emotional and behavioral challenges. My school is also a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, and many of my students face housing and financial insecurity as well.

This is the first year that my school has had an art program in eight years, and the students are eager and excited about the arts!

As a new teacher, I have already seen the arts bring out sides of students that other teachers had not seen before. For example, I have seen students who are non-verbal discover new ways to communicate their ideas through art; I have seen students who struggle in other academic areas become leaders in art class, finding innovative and creative solutions to art problems; and I consistently see students with behavioral issues who have difficulty focusing, fully engaged in hands-on art making.

It is clear that my students benefit greatly from the arts! It not only gives them new tools for communication and expression, it also provides new opportunities for students to experience success, to develop confidence and to develop a strong sense of self.

My Project

Teaching art on a cart is not easy. Art Class requires (a lot) of materials, space, water, clean up etc. and while my school does not have the luxury of a designated art room, I am grateful that I get to provide an art education to students by bringing it to them.

A larger cart would not only allow me to bring more materials into the classroom for students to explore and use, giving them more opportunities to express themselves, it would also provide more space to organize and label materials so that students can access them independently.

Last, a larger cart would help with storing and transporting student's work safely after each class. With your support, I can really PUSH past my current limitations and ensure a quality art experience for all my students.
