This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are 4th-6th graders who are two to three grade levels behind in reading. When I teach, I put an emphasis on phonics instruction based on the exact skills they are missing. My students are hardworking and very receptive to this method, and I have seen a lot of success using it; however, they need more practice using these phonics skills in context rather than in isolation. This is where I struggle to keep my students engaged. The books we have that focus on these phonics skills are very small and short, and have pictures that are very juvenile. My students constantly ask why they have to read "baby books".
For this reason, my students need easily decodable chapter books that look like books other students their age are reading.
The chapter books I am requesting for this project look like chapter books, but are written at a lower level and focus on the skills I am teaching. Being able to have my older students practice these skills with confidence and enthusiasm is my ultimate goal. I want them to feel successful in reading while not feeling embarrassed for being behind other students their age.
