Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that is 27% limited English proficiency.

After 20 years of general education, I am now working with diverse learners.

These students are so anxious to learn, but I don't have the materials I need to meet them at their levels. Most of my students are in 7th grade, yet many of them are still learning to read or read significantly below grade level.

My Project

A love of interesting pictures and visual supports doesn't just apply to the lower elementary grades. Our reluctant and struggling readers in the middle want books with lots of pictures and visual supports too. The book selected are all high interest graphic novels many are specific requests from students for new books they want to have in the room.

It's important to help these kids finish strong and stay interested in independent reading as we are getting into the final stretch of the school year.

These new books will be just the thing to re-energize my class and refresh my library.
