My Students

Having a meeting place is very important for young learners and my new classroom is without a rug. We need a meeting place! (And we don't want their little bottoms on the cold tile floor, do we?)

I haven't met my students yet (though I will in about three weeks!!), but they are first graders in the southeast.

They attend a K-5 elementary school and I know they'd love mini-lessons on the rug rather than lecture-style teaching in their desks!

My Project

Classroom dynamics are shifting (for the better) from teacher-centered to student-centered. One aspect of that shift is the mini-lesson, an opening presentation that leads into flexible small groups, activity-based learning, collaborative learning, and progress monitoring. Mini-lessons, calendar time, and other meeting-based encounters usually occur in the same spot - the meeting place. That meeting place is usually on a large rug. It makes the experience more comfortable than sterile desks, it groups the children, teacher, and learning materials closely together, and the rug helps keep the children hemmed in during the meeting times. This rug is multi-purpose and is desperately needed in this classroom!
