Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students LOVE story time! My school has a focus on balanced literacy so that the students are exposed to literacy throughout the day. There are currently 76 Kindergarteners in my school and because of the underserved community in which they live, they come to us with deficits in their foundational reading skills. Teachers need to explicitly teach print concepts and big books are the best way for teachers to model for the students in a big class. I want my students to become engaged and immersed in literacy.

My Project

Kindergarteners need to develop print awareness. When you have a big class of students, the best way to model directionality, capital letters, punctuation, and sight words is by using big books.

The titles I chose are the most popular emergent readers.

The kids love these stories and can re-tell them to classmates and to family members.

Students can also “re-read” the stories to each other during partner reading time and center time. Emergent readers also love to act out the stories during dramatic play time. Believe me when I say that these big books will be put to good use!
