My Students

We are a new preschool, in our second year serving approximately fifty 4-year olds. The beautiful, young students in my class are from a diverse, urban community in the Bronx, NYC. The majority of our families are of Dominican, Mexican, and Puerto Rican Heritage.

75% of our students qualify for free lunch and 100% are bright, curious and eager to learn!

School is a new experience for most of the children. I never tire of seeing the wonder on their faces when they are introduced to something--a book, a poem, a pastel crayon--that they have not experienced before. As a teacher, I want to expose them to as many new things as I possibly can in the short time that they are with me.

My Project

When children are learning about the way reading works, teachers and parents often focus on the most important letters to the child--the letters in his own name.

Oh look!

There's a capital A, just like the first letter of your name Aydan! In addition, we point out other clues that help children to become readers. Some examples: a period means we should stop reading for a moment. Letters make up words and words make sentences. We begin on the left side of the page and move to the right, when we read English.

In education, we refer to this as "concepts of print". They are the fundamentals of reading. When we read Big Books to children, two things happen. Children are immediately curious about the book in the same way that we as adults are drawn to look at posters. The "bigness" captures our attention. The other thing that happens is that all of the children in a large group read-aloud are able to clearly see the concepts illustrated, not just the children sitting closest to the teacher. It is difficult for the child sitting far back in the group to see a period at the end of a sentence in a standard size book.

Big books are a wonderful tool for teaching pre-readers about letter recognition, punctuation, and directionality. And who doesn't love seeing the letters of their name in a 72-point font? Big books, big joy!
