Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Where would so many of us be today without early access to rich literature? It opened our minds, stirred our imaginations, and fostered a love of words. We all have memories of favorite childhood books. They bring back old feelings and we look forward to sharing them with our own family one day.

As we all know, public schools are entering a state of crisis.

Budgets are being slashed, schools are closing, people are losing jobs,... all the while the children are the ones caught in the middle. I refuse to let my students slip through the cracks. This could easily be done, since I work in a high-need area, fraught with families living below the poverty line, single parent homes, language learners, and a highly transient population. In fact, my school was recently taken over because of failing test scores. So now, though the students haven't changed, the entire staff is new, and we must now make sure not one child is missed. This means that I am using every resource I have to make sure my students can read by the end of the year. Even more than that, I want to be sure that they ENJOY reading. I want books to become part of their way of life.

My Project

Big books are a fantastic way to get children more involved in reading. It allows them to read along, find words, see more details, and just generally feel more connected to a text. Unfortunately, though, these books are VERY expensive and good ones are hard to come by. So I'm asking for this big book stand and a small collection of books so that we can begin reading together more easily. Currently, I have to copy and enlarge the pages of a book, color them in, paste them onto cardstock, laminate them, cut them out, and bind them just to have a book large enough to read together. That's a lot of work and resources for something so simple! These materials would be a great start for a shared reading library, with enough space for me to store lots of books in the future!

I am constantly blown away by the generosity of visitors to this site.

I wish I could invite each of you to personally see what a difference you are making in my children's lives. To me, first grade is really about helping children love learning. I want them to feel successful, capable, confident, empowered and excited. Access to great literature has a lot to do with that. It opens the world to them, and with big books, they are the ones in the driver's seat.
