Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten students at a school in the Bronx. I work in a Title One school with a variety of levels and needs in one classroom, including English Language Learners. Some of us are in school for the very first time, while some of us were previously in pre-k.

My classroom is a place where students interact with each other to learn and grow.

We are very creative, love to read books, and like to use a wide variety of sensory materials to learn our numbers and letters! Our favorite book is Pete the Cat, I Love My White Shoes. We always try our best to succeed and never give up!

My Project

My classroom is in need of big books for shared reading lessons. Shared reading is important because it makes students feel successful in reading. In my class we read one book for the entire week. Each day we read the book using a different reading strategy. On Monday we look at the pictures, on Tuesday we look at the sight words, on Wednesday we look at the pattern, on Thursday we match the first letter sound to the picture and on Fridays I ask the students comprehension questions to see how well they understand the book. By Wednesday, the students are able to read the book without my help.

Shared reading teaches students important reading strategies.

As we do shared reading every day, I have noticed my students becoming better, independent readers. I see students saying "look I found a sight word!" or "Ms. Yue, I found a pattern in this book!" I see students saying the first letter sound in a word and trying to match it to a picture in their book.

As the school year progresses I am running out of big books to do shared reading. I am in need of books that have simple patterns. Students love to participate in shared reading and would be delighted to read and see new books. Reading is the foundation of education and opens up a new world to students. Reading is something that needs to be practiced everyday and big book read alouds can engage all learners and make them feel successful!
