My Project

As the social worker at a middle school, I see a variety of needs within our student population. Often, our students are exposed to gang violence, drugs, homelessness, and instability. The school becomes their haven and allows them to learn skills they may not have the time to discover outside our walls. When the students come to my office, they are reaching out to work through their trauma so we can reduce barriers to their learning and gain life skills for their future!

Counseling improves self-esteem, reduces anxiety, strengthens coping mechanisms, and improves social functioning.

The expressive art items will assist me in working with children and adolescents on essential life skills so that they can become successful and independent adults. Often in one-on-one settings, middle school students are hesitant to open up. Expressive items can help calm them and take their minds off the situation at hand so they can speak freely or speak through their art.

Games are an excellent way of helping students talk about or work through problems and emotions without even knowing they are doing so. We then apply those same skills and solutions to their real-life challenges.

I appreciate your support in my project!
