My Students

I am hoping to develop an intermural tennis program at the school. If the program receives the 6 requested rackets, students who do not own one can still participate. The tennis balls would be used for practices in the program. I would use the cones in skill and fitness drills.

We are a suburban high school with approximately 50% minority.

Over 40% of our students receive free/reduced lunch meaning many of these students are in the lower socioeconomic status. The students like to be physically active but don't always have access to facilities. We are located in Florida which gives the students the ability to utilize the tennis facilities year-round. Our tennis courts were originally built in 1998 and are beginning to show their age. They are asphalt and do not have a smooth surface appropriate for tennis. There are a few cracks in the courts and some of the gravel is coming loose from the asphalt. This is creating hazardous contitions and jeapordizes the safety of the students. I am hoping additional funding can be provided to help pay for the resurfacing of the courts. I am in the process of requesting estimates for the cost of resurfacing.

My Project

I am hoping to create a safe tennis facility for all students to use both during tennis season and off-season. I would like to create an intramural program for all students to participate. Students will be taught the basics of tennis and how they can enjoy the game and physical fitness for their entire lives. We will also include nutrition and health instruction in the program.

This program will benefit students throughout the school.

Students will be able to use the courts during physical education classes, after-school and summer intramural programs and the tennis team matches. Withing the program we would be able to show the students how fun the sport of tennis can be and that it is a sport they can play their entire lives.
