This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Urban Grindz is the AUP and Engineering's Pop-Up Espresso Bar. In two weeks and using nothing more than an ELA classroom, some dedicated scholars, and a desire to learn the trade of coffee 15-20 seniors learned how to make espresso-based beverages from bean to latte art, serving over 112 drinks in their first business pop-up!

Now, in turning this into an established, daily cafe, Urban Grindz humbly needs help maintaining supplies, upgrading equipment, and creating a flow of inventory that will empower students to get their Food Handler's license, jobs at Brooklyn coffee shops, and help raise funding for our senior scholarship fund!

(An instructor's dusty french press can't be enough with a decade-old-about-to-die espresso machine!) These students are incredibly passionate, giving weeks of time to designing merch, logos, stickers, reaching out to local shops, and creating spaces for collaboration. We need: structure, support, and some materials to create long-term success and funding.

Right now, we have staff-donated and instructor-provided machinery that is on its way out. We want to be able to provide to our campus (over 2,000 students and at least 100-200 staff) a reliable, student-ran, student-led, student-designed high-end espresso bar that empowers us all in our community.

Encourage creativity! Encourage the idea that espresso and coffee culture is for all! And help us build the future by showing the ins and outs of the service industry (customer service, inventory, ordering products, designing prices, cost-benefit analysis, etc). In a world where everyone outside of education says "Why don't kids do "real life" and "hands-on" things anymore...voila
