Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my years of teaching, I have never seen a mental crisis this alarming. I work in a city adjacent to an industrial hub, home to over 1,800 businesses in food, agriculture, apparel, and steel industries that employ most of my students’ families. Since most work in jobs with no proper access to time off, the pandemic continues to have a substantial impact on this neighborhood. Many of my students are grieving family members who died from Covid. Moreover, my students are dealing with a myriad of social-emotional distractions making it hard to stay calm and be open to learning. I adjusted my classroom to make space for art and saw immediate interest from my students.

I found that opening my classroom for art during free time and lunch allowed my students a much-needed safe space to decompress and take a break from social media.

Even kids not in my classroom would ask if they could come and paint and draw during lunch. Of course, they were allowed, however, I do not have the art supplies needed to make this a sustainable space.

This is why I am requesting a donation to fund this art space with all the materials they need, from acrylic paint, markers of all shades and tips, watercolors, and the canvases and paper needed to express themselves and finally have a moment to exhale and make room for learning. Research shows art helps improve working memory and that it sharpens our reasoning skills as well, which is what they need to do to excel in their academic endeavors. Please consider turning their frowns into art!
