Every year I have my students complete an interest survey for each subject as a way to gain information on my new students. Without fail, the interest of science usually falls at the bottom of my students' list of enjoyment. I spend all year cultivating a love for the exploration of this subject.
My students are inquisitive individuals who enjoy the thrill of a good challenge.
As students at a full time gifted school, they thrive on meaningful and authentic lessons where application and relevance are evident. They respond best to hands-on learning, where they themselves can drive the curriculum and class discussions with experience and evidence. We lack materials that support these methods for our unit on rocks and minerals.
My Project
With the requested materials, we will be able to conduct several labs and activities on the topic of rocks and minerals. From sorting rocks to identifying the hardness of various minerals, my students will be given direct contact with the materials our textbook only merely discusses in words.
With every science lab and activity we complete, I slowly start to close the gap of disconnect between my students and science.
I am an advocate of STEM education, and creating lifelong learners, full of curiosity and a need for exploration. Even though my students are only nine and ten years old, the idea of careers and what they want to be when they "grow up" are already beginning to set in. Help me create mini scientists in my classroom with the requested materials.
