Our third, fourth, and fifth-grade musicians are getting ready for our annual Battle of the Bands! For several months, students work together to prepare -- selecting repertoire, rehearsing, making interpretive decisions, and navigating the technology and equipment we'll need for our big performance. As an important part of their musical learning, students develop strategies for rehearsing music together in pairs and small groups. Over time, students rehearse and perform with increasing independence, collaborating with their bandmates to make musical choices, learn repertoire, and refine their performances.
We use our weekly music lessons for group practice time -- but with multiple bands sharing the same space during music class, it's important for students in the same band to hear each other clearly!
Audio mixers and a few more pairs of headphones used together with our existing collection of headphones and splitters, would allow students to "plugin" and hear their partners or bandmates through headphones. This way, multiple bands can rehearse productively at the same time, in the same room. Students would also be developing confidence in navigating important and authentic music technology.
