Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
The majority of my students come from low-income households, some speak Spanish as their first language, and many of them have dealt with more in their few short years than a lot of adults. The adults in my students' lives have had similar experiences and, therefore, may not provide social, emotional, or academic support at home. The majority of my students have been learning all year virtually, but some have returned for in-person learning in March.
My goal for all the students I work with is for them to feel like they are successful in some way every day.
As a school psychologist, if I can help the students better understand themselves and others, they can persevere and be proud! Right now, I am trying to teach my students how to be mindful, recognize our emotions, problem-solve issues, highlight what we are doing well, and help others. Many students are frustrated with being out of practice with academic skills, so we are working through that!
My Project
When our students come into our school building for pre-k or kindergarten, it may have been the first time they have tried using scissors. Many of our students may not have access to fine motor activities like drawing, coloring, or writing at home. Because of the pandemic, many of our students were home for a year, and we are noticing that students who have come back (even in second grade) are having more trouble remembering how to form letters and numbers correctly. With sustaining the stamina, they need to write in school. Some students are becoming frustrated when asked to write, and many parents notice their children reversing letters and numbers now.
Our students need individual fine motor centers that can help them build strength in their hands and reinforce prewriting and writing skills.
An occupational therapist specializing in fine motor skills has recommended activities such as these (tweezer tasks, pinching, manipulating small items like beads, pulling through heavy putty, and cutting) to build up our students' stamina and skills. These activities also correspond with what our kids need in math and early literacy while keeping things hygienic in their own individual carrying cases. We can't wait for our students to have fun while building their endurance and growing their writing ability!
