This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you recall what it was like to immerse yourself in a good book? Delve into fantastical worlds, or have a whirlwind romance, or command an army? To read something you couldn't put down?

My students attend a Title I school with a rough reputation.

Many have been fighting uphill battles their whole lives against torn-apart families, drugs, violence, and poor educational standards. Indeed, even the students who excel still, generally, read well below grade level. Many of them want a real chance to graduate high school and attend college and many wish to change the reputation of the school and their community. They know their foundational skills are not as strong as other skills in the community, and they seek out opportunities to improve their situation.

My Project

My students need a diverse classroom library for independent reading. Research indicates that independent reading can drastically improve reading comprehension skills and vocabulary, even in a limited time frame. The key to motivating students to read, particularly those who have little experience with reading for pleasure and particularly those who have found little success with reading, is to have a diverse selection to choose from, so they can find something within their interests to keep them motivated and excited to keep turning the page. With enough interest and practice, a high school student currently reading at a fifth or sixth grade level can grow more confident as they develop the skills they were before lacking. With independent reading, students will be expected to choose a book and read in class thirty to forty-five minutes a week, after which they will be asked to engage and think critically of what they're reading by writing it and speaking about it with classmates.

I have students who are upperclassmen and have literally never read an entire book.

They are shocked when they have to read in an English class. Past failure with reading has made them afraid of books and many have never had the opportunity to find their interests mirrors in the stories they have been made to read. Independent reading will, ideally, rid them of some of their angst about reading while engaging their interest and improving their skills.
