Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My wonderful first and second graders love reading - especially graphic novels, superhero books, and joke books. They are caring, creative and hard-working. Their eyes light up when they are engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

Please, help make our classroom into the organized and supportive learning environment my students so desperately need.

For many of my students, the classroom is a place to escape into a nurturing, supportive environment. Almost all of them come from low-income households. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Once they are in the classroom, we work hard to create a nurturing space that will help them live up to their potential and be happy, healthy, and successful.

My Project

My students love the characters in these books like they love their best friends! As a reading intervention teacher, I work with students who have been identified as needing extra help with reading. Finding books these students are excited about is an absolutely essential part of this work, but it can be challenging to find high-interest books at a level that is accessible to them. Pete the Cat, the Giggle Gang, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and the Pigeon books are engaging but still easy to access.

My students will be eager to visit their friends in these books again and again, helping them become confident, proficient readers.

Re-reading familiar stories is one of the greatest ways for beginning readers to grow into develop independence. These are books they will reach for again and again.

The Give a Mouse a Cookie series is a perfect read aloud book for developing readers. Each book in the series follows the same structure, so after hearing the book read aloud a few times the kids are ready to read it together, helping them connect oral and written words. The Pigeon books by Mo Willems are student favorites. These funny page-turners help little readers grow. My students love the books from the Giggle Gang series because the text is simple enough and the story lines are highly engaging.
