Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If you have ever played a brass instrument, you know how difficult it can be to produce a sound. You must use the right amount of air and your lips must be positioned correctly. The Berp is a device my students will be able to use to improve their playing.
Most of my students come from economically disadvantaged homes where they eat free or reduced school lunch meals on a daily basis.
I know that music education is making them better human beings and well rounded citizens of our country. As well as improving their test scores on state mandated tests. My students love band so very much; so much, that the band hall is their second home. Not just their second home, but also their second family. They are always looking out for each other in any way possible. They know that it is an honor to be a musician in our band program and they take it very seriously. So, even though we may not have the best equipment for learning music, they will always try their best.
My Project
The Berp is the most efficient tool I can use to help my students become better brass players. It is designed to allow my students to buzz their mouthpiece while holding the instrument in the regular playing position. The player can then press the valves or move their slide to match the pitches they are buzzing. The connection is made between buzzing the mouthpiece and playing the instrument in a very real way. The benefits of buzzing have now been increased and expanded considerably with the Berp concept.
Buzzing the mouthpiece exposes what my students are doing or not doing with their air and embouchure.
A good buzz on the BERP translates into a great sound on their instrument. The BERP makes buzzing efficient and relevant by recreating the resistance of the instrument and allowing my students to finger the valves or move their slide to the pitch they are buzzing. The BERP can show them how to fix their sound before it gets amplified by the instrument.
