Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am fortunate to work with an amazing group of students. They are at a variety of levels both academically and economically.

We are located in South FL and listed as a Title I school.

97% of the students are in free or reduced lunch. I am looking for ways to reinvigorate a love for reading.

They all need assistance with focus, as many of them are overcoming many obstacles in their day to day lives. Whether it is trying to overcome generational curses or their environment. Many are growing up way too fast with little direction or opportunities to develop into productive adults.

My Project

My goal is to have my students sit back and get comfortable and read.

I feel a reading cafe with flexible seating will grow readers.

Image living in an environment where sustenance is always on everyone's mind. You long for a place you can get lost in, and travel to a place learning new things and discovering new adventures. The TV is always on but books are conveniently absent from the home. You have access to books at school but the chairs are rock hard and uncomfortable. A reading cafe with flexible seating would allow them to be comfortable and to get lost for a while in the pleasure of reading and exploring ​books. The table, stools, bean bag chairs, and rug are a start to building a fully functioning reading Lounge our "Bengal Cafe."
