My Project
My students are kind, caring, and have a genuine curiosity for learning. They all want to do their best and please their teachers. However, many of my students are non readers or are reading 3-4 grades below the expected reading level for their age. So as their speech teacher I focus on developing their phonemic awareness skills (the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words) which is a precursor or building block to acquire reading proficiency. However, once they have met their phonemic awareness goals many of them continue to have difficulty with phonics, word recognition, and reading fluency.
As a result, I would like to purchase Rime Magic, a word recognition system that focuses on the rime in words (the vowel and consonant combination) that helps to read or decode the word.
Often times, struggling readers recognize the initial letter sounds in words when attempting to sound out but they get stuck with the middle part of the word and end up guessing a word that is incorrect and does not resemble the target word at all. Rime magic teaches students to recognize the middle part of the word and build reading fluency skills, and their confidence. Rime magic also uses an immersive approach to reading by having them recognize rimes, consonant clusters, and suffixes rather than teaching sounding out letter by letter, and students see results fast. If I can get this resource and the LED finger lights into my speech therapy room, I am sure I will help them to achieve their reading goals.
