Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all over the world. They bring a special blend of linguistic diversity, background knowledge, prior experiences and culture to our school. We are a Title I school in a low-income community and most of our classes have 32 students in one class. Free breakfast and free lunch are available to every child in our building each day, which are now remotely served.

My students are creative, intelligent and very enthusiastic about learning.

They love listening to stories, learning about new and unique cultures and habits. They enjoy new experiences and lessons that engage them in meaningful conversations and thinking.

Now that we are distance learning, it is time to get very creative with our lessons and how we present them.

My Project

No pandemic will stop me from helping my students learn the skills they need to be successful in life. In school, my kiddos were learning how to read, write, solve problems, and be well rounded individuals. Now my living room is my classroom. Therefore, it is very important that I have the resources to help them grasp the concepts and skills they need to succeed in the next school year. Some of these skills that we are going to work on are empathy, confidence, inclusiveness, gratitude, and kindness.

Kids need to see themselves in literature.

Having a classroom library full of diverse books would help all children grow. Through understanding various cultures and social groups, students are able to make connections from their own lives to the lives of their peers. Teaching diversity increases cultural competence, which in turn allows students to be empathetic to the experiences of others.

With these books, I will be able to bring these stories to life during our live instruction. Eventually, when we go back to the classroom, these books will be readily available for them to read themselves.
