My Students

As a second year teacher, I have only known what teaching looks like during the pandemic. I have not yet had the opportunity to teach in a “normal” school year, other than the internships and other experiences I have had pre-covid. COVID-19 has impacted learning over the past two years tremendously. I have seen the majority of 2nd graders, 2 years in a row come in at a Kindergarten or First grade level. They are rarely on level and if they are, they are missing so many primary skills that have to be re-taught or reviewed.

What makes my students so unique is that they only know what school is like during the pandemic. These students are always prepared for any restrictions, guidelines, and change of plans that will occur throughout the school year.

The students are also extremely familiar with technology because that is what the pandemic has taught them. We make sure to build in a time for technology into our daily routines because we want them to be constantly prepared for the unexpected.

My Project

Being pandemic prepared is the most important thing we can teach our students today. We have to be ready for the unexpected at all times. Technology plays a huge roll in our learning environment. Our students are on their computers 2x a day and even more if need be. We still include hands on, collaborative, independent, and whole group activities throughout are day. Though, technology plays a huge part in our independent work. Students have to understand how to navigate and access the computer so they are ready for virtual days, weeks, or even months.

With the ever changing requirements associated with the pandemic this technology will insure my classroom is ready for the unexpected.

Having an organized technology charging station would change our classroom management and environment in many areas. Being able to control the chaos that occurs during charging the computers would change our routine in a calm and quick way. Without the charging station we have to worry about: students chargers not working, students not placing their computer in the same place, students taking another students charger, and students not knowing where to place the computer. Classroom management sets up the tone for your classroom and not being organized can affect that negatively.

Having the charging station will also set an organized classroom environment tone. When our chargers and computers are all over the floor it takes away from the class space we could be using for flexible seating in multiple areas around the room. Having one charging station for all of their computers and accessories without them being all over the place would be extremely helpful to both the students and our class. Technology is continuing to progress in our world, school systems, daily routines, and even daily lives because of the pandemic.
