My Students

My first graders are excited about learning plants. My students love to go outside to look, feel, and taste the edible plants I am growing. When I told my students that we will grow our own plants, all my students' eye lit up with excitement.

My school is Title I.

Over 90 percent of student population are on free or reduced lunch. Most of students do not have chances to explore other eating options due to their parent's low economic situation. Therefore, many of my students do not eat enough vegetables. Most of them have never had the opportunity to garden, and many of them do not have any concept of how our fruits and vegetables get to the table. Many students believe that they come from the super market. We will explore other options and I will teach them how they can plant their own vegetables at home.

My Project

My students are going to compare the growth of the plants in soil and in water. Most of my students think that plants need soil to grow. First, my students will plant seeds in the school garden and also use hydro system to plant as well. My class will then observe the difference in each. After a week or so when plants start to sprout, we will be collecting the data in our Science journals to see the difference in growth between the ones in soil and the ones in water. After a few months, my students will be able to harvest their plants. Then, my students will make salad and be able to enjoy their own vegetables. My students will learn how the plants grow and the growth of the plants do not require soil. Also my students will learn the healthy alternative to eating, and therefore, building healthy eating habits through their life.

My students will learn how the plants grow in soil and as well in water.

My students will learn to eat more vegetables by growing their own vegetables and having a ownership of their own plants. My students also learn to work as team and help each other by attending the classroom garden.
