Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me re-vamp my classroom library to continue to engage my bilingual third grade readers. In third grade, students have the opportunity to receive a certificate of Bilingualism, based on their ability to read in Spanish and English. This is one of their steps in reaching the seal of biliteracy when they graduate high school. Having access to books that are in Spanish and English, in a variety of genres, including history that represents my students identity, is a crucial step in supporting literacy.

Having new books that spark curiosity, align with our curriculum and project based learning will support all students in reaching their biliteracy goals.

The key to this is offering students a diverse selection of books from literature, graphic novels, history and books that represent cultures, Black leaders and untold stories.

Third grade is a special age where students curiosity for reading really blossoms. During third grade students interactions with books really transforms and takes off. Students go from learning to read, to reading to learn. It is a really cool phenomenon to witness as a teacher, and one that I cannot do without access to new books.

We will use these books to create small groups, book clubs read aloud, independent reading and expeditionary learning projects. Thank you for supporting our classroom library!
