Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I hail from Cali, Colombia and I'm a new Spanish teacher at Mountain View Elementary, Our school is a Title 1 Spanish and English Immersion School and we are the only elementary school in our division that has this emphasis on learning two languages! We are so proud of our students and our school!

I'm passionate about fostering a love of reading in my students.

I'm currently teaching three Spanish reading classes and am working to build a classroom library filled with Spanish books. Having access to books is crucial for developing strong literacy skills by helping students expand vocabulary, improve comprehension, and spark imaginative and creative thinking.

My second graders come from a variety of backgrounds, with many being first-generation students or children of immigrant families. A portion of our students at our school speak Spanish at home, and many others are just beginning to acquire reading skills in Spanish. We are a close-knit, multicultural community, and this project would directly support our efforts to nurture bilingual and biliterate learners.

Students who have access to books in their first language and a second language develop stronger reading and cognitive skills. By offering books in Spanish, we will provide linguistic support and also promote a positive cultural identity for our Spanish-speaking students. This collection will be an invaluable tool for supporting literacy development in our classroom.

Your donation will create a welcoming and inspiring learning environment for my students. We need your help! Please help us buy Spanish books for our students to read during their choice time and at home Our classroom library would be much improved with the addition of a variety of picture books, early chapter books, and nonfiction texts in Spanish. This will encourage independent reading and support literacy at home in both English and Spanish.
