Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Bronx is an often-overlooked borough of New York City. Situated directly north of Manhattan, the Bronx seldom receives the recognition it deserves. But the "Boogie Down" has played an important role in the history and development of New York City. Named after Jonas Bronck, who established the first colonial settlement in the region in the mid-seventeenth century, the Bronx is home to the New York Yankees; the birthplace of hip-hop; and the only part of New York City located on mainland America. It is also the site of an earnestly thriving high school seated in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country.

The students who attend this school--and the teachers who work there--are passionate advocates of the Bronx as a borough that warrants the attention its more popular neighbor to the south garners on a daily basis.

To promote the Bronx as a borough worthy of acclaim, teachers at the school will participate in a staff book club whose theme--memoirs written by people who call the Bronx home--will uphold the borough's reputation as the birthplace of people who leave indelible marks on the worlds of politics and art.

My Project

For the past three years, I have coordinated a staff book club at my school using materials received through DonorsChoose. Each year has had a theme: the first year was memoirs about teaching--to offer a dose of empathy and humor; the second year focused on cross-curricular texts--in order to broaden teachers' general knowledge; and the most recent year entailed the reading of canonical texts-- so that teachers can familiarize themselves with the reading lists of many high school syllabi. The theme for the fourth installment of the staff book club is memoirs about growing up in the Bronx, the borough of New York City where our school is located, where our students call home, and where talent and ambition are as ubiquitous as bodegas.

The three titles in this project--by Dion DiMucci, Mary Higgins Clark, and Sonia Sotomayor--showcase how people who call the Bronx home have grown up to make significant contributions to the arts, literature, politics, community service, and social activism.

Reading memoirs written by people who walked the same streets as our students will increase teachers' ability to empathize and connect with the young people they encounter in the classrooms and the hallway and, in the process, maximize instructional effectiveness and foster school pride.

A staff book club provides a forum for teachers of all grade levels and content areas to engage in lively and intellectual discourse. And it is likely that teachers will recommend the books outlined in this project to their students, instilling in them a love of reading--and the knowledge that the rich history of the borough they call home yielded people, once young and eager just like them, who are no longer overlooked.
