My Project

You may have heard of “The Science of Reading,” which encompasses five main areas: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our state has embraced it by passing The Right to Read Act, which aims to “to ensure students can accurately decode and fully comprehend grade-level text by third grade and beyond.”

But long before they get to third grade, my students enter kindergarten with wildly different abilities - some can already read, but some don’t even know the alphabet yet.

I want to better support emerging readers by expanding the library’s collection of books that have controlled vocabularies, repeated phrases, and easy-to-understand plots.

When I ran an analysis, our current supply of very early readers (level 0.0-1.9) makes up 11% of the collection, but - especially for the first trimester - 33% of our students make up this population.

For some of my students, their weekly trip to the school library is the only time they're able to choose books for pleasure reading. Your support will help support them!
