Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest performing sub-group at our high school.
The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a third grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of our students are African American or Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Our department budget is $500 for over 300 students. Our classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is virtually nonexistent. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without the requisite tools to teach our students.
My Project
On the first day of school, I ask all of the students to provide essential items for the classroom. All of the students write down my requests and head out of the door at the end of the day, hopeful that the requests will be granted.
Sadly, often the parents of my students are unable to provide the essential materials that I ask them to.
The materials that I have requested will bring our lessons to life! I will ask the students to create illustrations based on articles that we read in TIME for kids. For example, the students will create pictures of famous places that they read about. The students will be required to add specific details to their illustrations that they can show me from the text. The markers, glue sticks and pens will are essential in order for the students' work to be colorful. It will allow them to be imaginative in their responses, instead of dark, dreary and boring.
One of my goals this year is to keep my students organized. I've asked for file folders to keep my students work filed in. The gel pens will allow them to label their files accordingly. The desk calendar will be hung in the classroom to remind the students of important due dates.
Another goal of mine is to create lessons that allow for movement. Sitting in a desk all day can be a difficult task for students, so I've asked for athletic equipment. We can play multiplication football and other interactive, educational games. I've also asked for an athletic bag to store the equipment in.
In the very beginning of the year, it is extremely hot. Our school has no air conditioning so I have requested a fan to keep the children cool and ready to learn.
