Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a fourth-year teacher in Baltimore City. My 5th-grade classroom, which is in a small school located in Southwest Baltimore, thrives on student happiness and success. Each and every student who walks through our door brings his or her own set of inspirations and life experiences, and they inspire me every day to be the best I can be. About 86.3% of our students are on the free or reduced-price meal plan, and 25.2% are English Language Learners.

I wholeheartedly believe that every single one of my students has what it takes to be successful, and I am willing to try whatever it takes to get them where they need and WANT to be.

I love seeing our students, throughout the whole school, walk in with smiles on their faces, and I will try anything I can think of to ensure those smiles remain there. After all, school is all about learning and growing together.

My Project

As I am wrapping up this school year and seeing students excited for their summer plans, I can't help but think about next school year already. I was fortunate to begin this year by providing my students with a great deal of brand new materials that they deserve more than anyone. These materials set us up for success in various ways, starting on the day I broke them out.

I hope to provide my upcoming fifth graders with a similar experience and the opportunity to start the year off strong with brand new supplies.

This coming year I will have more classes and larger class sizes due to shifts within our building. Due to that, I am in need of restocking my materials. All of the materials that I am hoping to obtain from this project will be directly used by my students on a daily basis. Each day we will use both the notebooks and other supplies to directly support our learning. We use notebooks in class so frequently that we often end up needing two a year for each student. Post it notes and dry erase markers are another staple in the class. We are always marking up the books we are reading with notes and then using dry erase markers as a way to practice our word study (sometimes really changing it up and writing directly on our desks with them!)

I also added some extra flexible seating into our basics list this year as over the past few years some of our extra seating options have become a little worn down. I just really want my students to feel at home in the classroom and I feel if they see all the necessary materials on day one it sets a great tone.
