My Students

My urban school is 70% eligible for free or reduced price lunch. It is 95% children of color. 65% of students speak a language other than English at home. We welcome immigrants from China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Tonga, Samoa, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Haiti. We also have a large African-American population, and a small number of Native students.

Despite our struggles with poverty and language barriers, the school culture is one of inclusivity, tolerance and kindness.

We set high academic standards for every child. We expect at least one year's growth from every student's individual starting point each year; 1.5 for students starting below grade level. The sign board on our busy street reads: "Choose Love." We do.

My Project

My classroom walls are lined with bookshelves, as my home was when I was a child. Research shows that the very most effective strategy for improvement in all academic areas is reading for pleasure. When students devour a book, it adds to fluidity and vocabulary, which in turn make harder books less challenging. Most of my students don't have a lot, or any, books at home. I try to provide a library that is varied and addresses all interests. However, there are certain books that are super popular, and since I let the kids keep books they love, I need to replenish!

My most important job as a teacher is to make sure all students are challenged at the appropriate level.

This is easy with compliant and motivated kids. On the other hand there are kids who are harder to reach, and for them I need to make sure I have books on hand that, despite their initial reluctance, will draw them in and insist on being read.

I am such a believer in reading for fun. It's only fun if students can find the just-right book. The titles on this list are perennial favorites that can tempt even the least motivated student.
