My Students

All 450 of my K-4 students were introduced to computer coding this year and they fell in love with it! Every day they ask when they can do it again! Even the kindergarten students want more!

Ours is a K-4 public elementary school in southern Maine.

The 450 students attend classes in the computer lab once every six days. Coming to the computer lab is the favorite part of their day. My goal is to help teachers find new and engaging ways to incorporate technology in the regular classroom to take learning to a higher level. Teachers are anxious to do this and students are excited about having it happen. These Bee Bots will make this happen, since students practice many skills in an exciting and challenging way.

My Project

The students really love working on their computers, especially when they are coding. Even the youngest students have found success. Computer coding (programming) requires students to practice skills in every content area while being creative and finding success. By using this tool, students can combine programming and other learning. For example, a teacher can place sight words on the floor and ask students to write the code for their Bee Bot to drive to specific words, perhaps in alphabetical order. Students practice alphabetizing, reading, and coding all at once. It is far more engaging to do it this way than with simple flash cards. Older students can practice math challenges by coding their Bee Bots to a series of numbers that add up to a specified sum or that can be multiplied to a specific product. The Bee Bot robots can be programmed directly, using the control panel on top of them, or through one of the free iPad apps available. The possibilities are almost endless.

When I receive the Bee Bots I will teach students and teachers alike how to use them and code with them.

Teachers in all classes will check them out for use in their classrooms. Instead of helping just one student, this grant will help all 450 of our students! Students learn amazing problem solving and critical thinking skills in addition to content skills. It is incredible to see them tackle a difficult coding challenge and conquer it. The smiles on their faces say more than anything else.
