Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth grade students are eager learners with diverse cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are English language learners who bring enthusiasm and curiosity to every task, even the challenging ones. I work with many newcomers to the United States who have endured great obstacles to be here. It humbles me to see how much they value education and how they strive to succeed in a new land, language, and culture.

We perceive diversity as a strength to be harnessed and nurtured.

In my classroom, we often design lessons and activities around an inquiry model, so that all students are exposed to rigor. At the same time, they can access content in meaningful ways.

At our school, we believe that a collaboration of families, teachers, and students is what makes our community resilient. We are always learning and evolving in our practices.

My Project

Remote and in-person learning have become the norm this year. To maintain engagement, I have had success by creating opportunities and projects that allow students to apply their knowledge to authentic, real-world tasks. Though my students' reading proficiencies have been impacted by the interruptions this past year, we have had a degree of success by creating online book blogs where students review and share opinions about texts they have read.

The Chromebooks and the library sets will inspire my students to enhance and broaden the content on our new book blog.

By immersing themselves in new and exciting books, they will enthusiastically share their opinions and cultivate their love of reading. Access to technology is critical now. Having extra Chromebooks will ensure that my entire class can contribute to the blog at the same time. Writing about reading improves my students' opinion-writing skills and allows them to experience the power of student voice in a literary context.
