Becoming Poets at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe

Help me give my students a trip to the historic Nuyorican Poets Cafe, where they will meet with teaching artists, write their own poems, and perform them on the same stage where other famous poets got their start.

My Students

I work at a high school in New York City where we strive to create a school community that recognizes the multitude of experiences and talents that each student brings to the classroom.

They deserve the opportunity to share their stories and voice their concerns.

After all, the youth who are directly affected by our society's challenges have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.

In addition to their drive and imagination, our students also have a profound understanding of their own experiences and extraordinary insight into the world around them. And their energy is the stuff that movements are made of.

My Project

My students are incredibly talented and my goal as a teacher is for them to truly recognize those talents by giving them space and opportunity. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe has been providing just that to young poets for generations. Many of my students don't know about this historic venue, which has given struggling artists and communities of color a voice in turbulent times. But in April, National Poetry Month, we'll introduce this important piece of history to our classes.

Students will tour the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, work with teaching artists to write their own poems, and then get the chance to perform those poems on the same stage that so many famous artists got their start.

This will be especially significant to our students who are already writing verse in their journals and performing in subway cyphers with their friends. I want my students to know that their words have meaning, power, and that they are not alone in their search to put what they are feeling on paper. We hope you'll help us to show our students that there are people out their listening, eager to hear what they have to say.

In addition to this visit, we plan to have students organize a school-wide poetry reading of their own, complete with music and dance. They will use the poems that they developed at the Nuyorican and invite family members and friends. This event will be student-led and will showcase the many hidden gifts of our community.
