Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach at a Title I performance improvement school with the majority of our students participating in the free lunch program. For many of my students, school is where they have access to books, supplies, and other resources that support their academic achievements. Many of my students come from homes where their parents are working hard to make ends meet and want their students to be successful in school.
My second graders are inquisitive and love to learn, and they inspire my teaching every day!
My Project
During social studies, my second graders learn about urban, suburban and rural communities and about how government helps us live within our communities. Because of these standards, there is a perfect opportunity for my students to also learn how to earn and spend money in a simulated micro-economy where they will have jobs, learn how to be financially responsible and have the opportunity to be producers and consumers. There will be classroom jobs that will be posted, applications to be filled out and a payday for a job well done. My students will have "bank accounts" and a checking account to make deposits and withdrawals. They will have choices to make about their desks (to rent or not to rent, but own) and opportunities to earn bonuses and to spend money for tangible and intangible rewards. And if classroom rules are violated, then fines will be paid on ticket day, which will require them to make withdrawals from their bank accounts to clear their "tickets.” These hands-on experiences will also address and enhance grade-level math standards around working with money.
A simulated micro-economy will help my students have ownership of our classroom community, while giving them real-world experiences where they will learn valuable skills, such as responsibility, the value of saving and delayed gratification.
But to create this micro-economy we need math games to practice adding and subtracting money skills. Folders and labels will be used to give each student a portfolio to keep important paper work. Composition books will be used as "checkbooks" which my students will learn to balance and keep track of their money, practicing their addition and subtraction skills. Name tag holders will be used to help students identify their jobs within our community. Computer ink and paper will be used to print money.
