My Students

It's just a fish. Not so! We want our Kindergartners to become stewards of the Earth and develop a curiosity and interest in the living world. The typical Kindergartner's concept of animals is narrow, usually mammals. We want to expand their awareness of the animal kingdom.

Our K-8 school is located in a low-income, high-poverty, highly transient neighborhood in a large urban area of Illinois.

Families struggle to obtain the basic necessities of life for themselves, so pets are almost non-existent. In fact, several of our families live in the homeless shelter across the street from our school. Despite the hardships, our students come to school eager to learn. Our little ones are so cute and in awe of their spacious Kindergarten room, with its bright colors and interesting centers. They eagerly take to the hands-on activities. Their vocabularies expand as new ideas emerge. Our parents are often teary-eyed as they watch their precious child embrace school and show off what they have learned.

My Project

One of the centers is the science center, where I plan to develop the children's ability to do scientific inquiry, i.e. learn how to observe, ask questions, and communicate explanations. I'd like to have 2 aquariums in this center: one for goldfish and one for guppies. By having direct, extensive and personal experiences with these organisms, my students will construct and expand their knowledge of the animal world. Students observe and talk about these two "fish," recognizing differences in size, shape, color and movement. As we discuss what they see in the tanks, I write down snippets of informal conversations that I overhear and use these as springboards to drawing and/or writing in science journals. This develops vocabulary and shows connections between the spoken word and the written one. Students will be responsible for feeding the fish, watching the temperature of the water and turning the light on and off. This helps them develop a sensitivity toward living things.

By having these animals in the classroom, students get to thinking about what living things need to live and be healthy.

By bringing a part of the natural world into the classroom, the children gain a deeper understanding of the diversity of life. They will see that all living things are like one another in some ways but also unique unto themselves.
