My Students

My sixth graders live in an area that is a pocket of poverty. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago. As a result, the majority of students do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.

All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and many of them are the children of deployed military personnel.

Our school is not a Title I school, but my students have needs that are not being met by our school. They are wonderful kids, and they deserve a chance.

I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. I have a very transient student population. Over 50% of my class comes and goes during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Our student population is racially diverse.

My Project

We have started working with local community groups to learn about money and finance. I realize that my students need to learn more about math and finance, and I also want to help them acquire the skills to be successful in life. I have scrounged some materials, but we need more. I need four HP Chromebooks that my students can use in our classroom to use Google Docs, access Schwab Money Wise lessons and resources to learn about budgeting, and work on a math/stock market project. These Chromebooks are not just technology. They are actually more like an essential supplies. Twenty years ago, I would have asked for pencils. Today, students need up-to-date computer access inside and outside of school, especially for something like the stock market which changes daily.

I desperately need a few Chromebooks to help my students learn keyboarding, how to use Google docs, and finance skills like budgeting at the Schwab MoneyWise site.

The support of donors would have an immediate positive impact on the lives of my terrific kids. Our school lacks many resources. This severely handicaps my students. I want to form an After School Finance Club so my students can learn about math and finance while learning how to get along. I want to help them be prepared for college. I want them to dream of a better life. Help me to help them.
