Becoming Lifelong Readers: Reading A-Z

My students need Leading A-Z to access to a wide range of text at their reading levels with variety and diversity. Deaf students often are unable to use phonics as a base for developing reading skills.

My Students

My students use American Sign Language as their primary language. Few students have full access to full communication at home, meaning that their time at school is crucial.

"The problem is not that the students do not hear.

The problem is that the hearing world does not listen." Rev. Jesse Jackson

My students are fourth and fifth graders at a Title I school in East LA. They are bused in up to two hours to our school from all over LA in order to provide full support and access in our "Total Communication" program. Many have language delays that impact their reading levels. Finding a wide range of books to meet their needs is a struggle. We've used Reading A-Z for 3 years and lost funding this year. They are begging me for a way to keep reading online, in class and at home. My students enjoy soccer, baseball, basketball, movies, art, drama, music, hiking, and socializing. They are a small, but tight-knit group of students who love coming to school where they have full communication.

My Project

This Reading A-Z technology and access to books is a resource that we have used daily before we lost the funding to renew our subscription this year. I have a large collection of leveled books at my students' reading levels thanks to RAZ. At least half of my lower level books are from this website. My student each had their own accounts which they were able to use both at home and in the classroom. The students are motivated to collect stars and change their robots through reading books and taking quizzes. We are able to address test-taking skills through the use of these quizzes. When we lost the funding, my students begged for a way to bring RAZ back.

My students want to read more, but need access and diversity.

They want to become better readers. A lack of access to phonics with a lack of resources makes this process more difficult. Lower level books are read quickly, so we need a larger variety of books to engage my students. RAZ provides that at a cost that is affordable. We use both printed copies and online resources to meet the needs of students wherever they are and whatever their level. They love when their day to read online comes around and are always asking for more time. The engagement and focus when technology is involved in undeniable. Reading is crucial to future success and RAZ provides access, opportunity, and motivation.
