My students need a tablet to use when they are exercising and to learn about health online. They will visit health related sites and write about healthy activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everywhere you look there is a growing statistic about childhood obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years and one in every five children age six to 11 is considered obese.
My first grade students attend a one year old inner city school.
Since the school is new the school district has provided limited funds for materials and playground/PE equipment to be purchased. Due to the emphasizes on test scores, the school has seen fit to purchase books and test prep materials over playground/PE equipment.
My Project
My goal is to teach all of my 50 children to be active and teach them ways to live a healthy lifestyle. As part of teaching my students about living a healthy lifestyle, they run a total of 26.2 miles in increments twice a week. I will upload the songs to the tablet and have activities outside with my students. I also teach them how to warm up, cool down, stay hydrated and give them nutritious snacks. Some of my students come to school without eating breakfast and our pre-workout snack is their first meal of the day. The tablet will also be used inside the classroom by my students to read digital books and visit child appropriate health related sites. The Common Core center will be used to assist my students write about PE, nutrition and other health related topics.
My students are eager to learn.
I want to be able to enhance their education by helping them learn about healthy habits. I believe that if my students become excited about being healthy and active, they will get their parents involved also.
