Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with 35 amazing students in an ICT classroom, which means half of my kids are special education and half are general education. I currently teach at a high needs middle school in the south Bronx. My students are very motivated to learn, and over the course of last school year, we have built a wonderful community of readers. The kids have all learned how to love books, and every single student in the class has moved up at least 3 reading levels-come have moved up as many as 10 levels in 10 months!

When my principal asked if I would like to move up with my kids and my co teacher, I jumped at the opportunity.

I have been so fortunate to teach them this year, and I can't believe I will be lucky enough to teach and learn with them again next year!

My Project

My students are reluctant readers. It is difficult to get books to stay in their hands, especially when the titles that the kids get to pick from are not interesting for our students to pick up. Many students want to read, but they pick up books, begin them, lose interest, and then put them down.

It is my goal to inspire every student in my class to want to read.

I want them to become lifelong readers, and by getting them books that they are excited to read, it is my hope that they will begin their journey as readers.
