My Students

I am an ELA teacher in a diverse middle school in Brooklyn, New York. I work in both a general ed class setting as well as an ICT class setting. My classroom is a place where all students can learn. We focus on many different skills to enhance students' writing. Students' writing is enhanced through working actively with texts.

To help students thrive, one of the main strategies we teach is close reading.

As close readers, students annotate, write notes, make inferences, scan the structure of the text, cite textual evidence, and so much more. This year, the Chancellor wants to include more culturally responsive texts so students are able to identify with what they are reading. By students being able to make text to self connections with what they are reading, their participation, attendance, GPA, critical thinking skills, and test scores are believed to all improve.

My Project

These materials will make a huge difference in my students' learning because it is so important for them to be exposed to texts that they can relate to. It is important for students to be able to make connections and relate to what they're reading about. By reading texts that students can relate to, they will feel more comfortable to participate and share ideas and input that are relevant. This will help students thrive and improve their comprehension, learn new vocabulary words and most importantly, enjoy reading. The ultimate goal is to maximize comprehension opportunities for each and every one of my students.
