This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine being 10 years old and not yet knowing how to read or write? Practice may not make perfect, but it certainly makes improvement! In order to get better at reading, students have to read. I need to get a wide variety of high-interest, low readability books into the hands of my students

I teach literacy to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a public school setting.

Some of these students have additional disabilities (Vision Impairment, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism). I also partner with other teachers within my school to provide leveled books to their struggling students. My school has 600 students (K-5). Our poverty and mobility rates are extremely high. 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My Project

Each year, I teach my students-- just like your shoes and shirts need to fit, so do your books. Matching students with right-fit books is essential for boosting reading success. I am requesting a wide variety of easy-to-read books to turn my non-readers into readers. Struggling students are often embarrassed to be seen with "baby books" and these books, with their size and binding resembling "chapter books" takes away some of this stigma. Success leads to more success and having a "right-fit-book" and then another, and then another, all readily available, allows for this continued success. My school participates in Accelerated Reader (AR) which further helps motivate students to set reading goals and meet them. However, a variety of books at the lowest AR levels are not readily available. These books will provide opportunities for my struggling students to participate in this program alongside their peers.

Whether it's basketball, driving, knitting, or video games, if you want to get better at something, you have to practice.

The same holds true for reading. Your donation to fund high-interest, low readability books for my classroom library will increase my students' opportunities to practice. It's a gift that will last for years to come. Thank you for your partnership in making a difference in their lives.
