Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are mostly from a very low socio-economic area of our city. They are predominantly Hispanic, although there are other ethnicities represented as well. My class is a wonderful mix of street-smart and tender, brash and empathetic, and tough yet vulnerable. Life has not been kind to many of them, yet they show kindness to one another. Life is difficult, but they are chin-up, shoulders-back ready to meet any challenge. These kids are engaged and engaging. I love them!

My Project

This novel is about a young Hispanic girl who lives with her great-grandmother and brother, and how she overcomes what life hands her. It closely mirrors the experiences of 99% of my students. It is so important that what they read in class can be linked to their own life experiences. I am very excited about the prospect of using this book in my leveled reading class! In addition to reading, we will participate in engaging activities related to the book, and wrap it up with a Naomi-themed celebration. I know my students will be 100% excited about this book.
