This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have a classroom of readers whose needs are not being met by our reading series. A large group of them need the challenge of novel studies, while others need a slower more deliberate pace that a longer story can give them.

My goal is to show them the value of classic literature.

When most of them want to read Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (not that there's anything wrong with that), I want them to learn appreciation for the written word by reading books with rich imagery and more complex characters. Our first novel of the year is usually "Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, a wonderful story about a lonely little girl who finds a dog in the grocery store. I've been using my personal class set for many years and as I brought the tub of books down this year, I realized how many of them are falling apart, pages missing. I desperately need a new class set of books for my students. I'm hoping that this year, my students will be able to once again read and enjoy this wonderful novel and learn to love reading even more!
