Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are many ways to tell a story. For some, words written and spoken easily flow to weave a tale, but for others showing is magical.

My students are the kind of children who are excited about art, and who do not fear to express themselves.

They applaud when I walk in, and share their thoughts, their visions2. Together we come up with ways to make those images appear in whatever format, usually using recycled goods. Photography has become something that intrigues them. How do we play with the light to render something banal into something special? How can we see beauty in a place where there isn't any, or is there? My students have nothing, they come to school without materials or bags, their uniforms are usually in bad shape but their enthusiasm never fails. They point to things and notice shapes and colors, and make meaning in a place where chaos reigns.

My Project

My students want to be able to capture their community, and everything that it entails in photographs. To do this, we need a digital cameras to help keep this inspiration going. They want to learn about light and colors, and how to manipulate a camera to share with their loved ones the humanity that surrounds them. They want to be able to look at their community in a different way, see beauty in the shadows on the sidewalk, the joy in a parent's face when picking up their child, children at play during recess. Wouldn't it be wonderful for them to be able to cast a positive look on their lives? Teach them that beauty is in the details viewed through an artistic eye? Let's show them that a root erupting from a slab of concrete is beautiful, that grass growing where there isn't dirt is worth something recording, that life can happen despite the odds.

I want my students and the ones to follow, to be able to look at the details of life.

To stop and see what surrounds them and appreciate it. They do not have much, and do not live in a community where flowers are seasonally planted and sidewalks cleaned daily. Beauty isn't obvious and manicured, but I want for them to be able to see that life is beautiful, even if they have to look a little harder.
