My Students

I am a special education teacher in a Title One school, as well as an art teacher after school teaching Literacy through Art. The great philosopher Plato quoted,"Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder". My students are in need of a camera for empowerment through the arts for visual storytelling.

I teach Pre-k through 5th grade Literacy through the Arts.

Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder looking through a camera lens. My students are creative and hands-on children seeking to raise their literacy scores. I teach many students to have a love of reading by engaging them through the arts. My students need real life situations through the humanities, to learn about life and prepare them for college readiness.

My Project

If I had a camera in the classroom I would be able to teach them visual storytelling. Visual storytelling is taking meaningful photos and creating stories that have the power to touch people. My students could take pictures to connect with other people and learn that each person they meet is very unique in their ideas and views life differently. Through the photos they could narrate stories that go with their photo, to connect to literacy and the life around them. They could also use their photos to make drawings and paintings, as another way to express themselves. My students need to learn that other children don't always have the same ideas as they do. They need to be exposed to diversity and how others co-exist, and through visual storytelling through photography they would be able to share their experiences.

My students want to be exposed to the world around them to grow.

Through real life photos that they take themselves, they can learn more about other people and their cultures. Our young population need to learn at a young age the importance of respecting others diversity and to connect. If we had a camera in my class I would be able to empower my students through art and photography, about the humanities in a hands-on way.
