About My Students

My students are 6th graders who attend the Citizen Science After School Club. They are coming from low income families and belong to the minorities. Even though they have low scores on the state exams, they are energetic, fun and want to learn science outside the school.

My students are community activists. They like to be exposed to diffirent problems in their community and try to figure out what they can do to fix the things that are very significant and important for thr community but nobody cares about

We study about the combined sewage overflow and its negative effect on the community. So, as the science club, we decided to increase the green infrastructure around our school to reduce the run off. We need planters so future flower will collect the rain water and less water will travel to drainage systems

In Their Own Words

The idea is when we increase the surface of green area, less water will run off, so will lead to less amount of sewage overflow depositied either into the East River or Hudson river. We will build some planters but we don't have enough supplies, so we ask for your support as well.

All of the students from the citizen science after school are actively involved into this project and each of them is a leader at some point because they learn about the important problem in their community and try to figure out what can be done effectively so the effects of the problem deminishes.

The project will help in solving the problem how to reduce the combined sewage overflow in our city. We already investigated that after rainfall the quality falls and the amount od fecal bacteria increase a lot. To reduce it, we want to create as many grean places as possible to reduce the run off and sewage drained into the rivers
