Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We always start our day by recognizing one another and greeting one another with a smile or just a kind word. My 3rd grade students are in the highest and most disadvantaged economic area of the South Bronx. Some days can be rough, others rather smooth. We choose smooth! We try to be mindful of situations that sometimes occur where we just have no control over them. Therefore, we look to one another to try and be good citizens towards each other and push ourselves to keep school as a place of higher learning and a safe haven where we know we will become a part of this world.

My Project

Reading is personal, and sometimes we just find comfort in reading an amazing book. Our classroom needs a comfy, colorful rug so we can just "sack out" and read to our heart's content! Our rug will also give us time to come together as a class and conduct our daily morning meeting and review our agenda for the day.

Providing our classroom with a rug will be essential during all segments of the school day.

A rug will support student choice seating and enhance their learning. A student cannot be confined to a desk all day; therefore, a rug provides an alternative as to where students may find contentment and enjoyment in learning. A rug can also serve as an alternative area for small group discussions and individual conferences. A rug suggests a more laid back approach to learning. Students feel more comfortable discussing their work because it isn't as formal.

A rug allows students the opportunity to work with other classmates. During buddy reading, buddy editing, and independent reading, students will have a quiet place to work using clip boards and feel less restricted on a rug. Having the gift of a rug, I will continue to provide a comforting and cozy environment for my students to learn.
