Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If they don't have it, it's my job to get it for them... My students are predominately Black and Latinx teens who travel from some of New York City's low-income neighborhoods to our school on the Upper West Side. The journey from their neighborhoods to our school is full of conflict and contrasts. They pass scores of exclusive private schools, zoned schools and screened schools in order attend our unscreened, Title I school. The vast majority of our student population qualifies for a free or reduced-price lunch. They sometimes come to school without the necessary supplies.

There are many factors that could serve to impede the success of my students, however, they consistently push through and persevere.

Every day, they come to school ready to question, ready to learn.

My Project

When our school building closed in March 2020, we thought we would be home for a month. Days turned into weeks and months and now a year. Slowly, we are beginning the return to normalcy and a transition back to in-person learning.

The condition of our school building reflects the uncertainty and panic that loomed in the air when we first left.

The spray from electromagnetic sanitizers has destroyed much of the aesthetics of our school. There is a vitality that is missing when one walks down the halls. But when my students return, I want them to feel the excitement and possibilities that await them. I want them to enter a building that invites and engages them.

A Cricut Maker machine and lots of colored vinyls will help me to bring color and life to our walls, bathroom doors, whiteboards and ceinings!
