Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is nothing quiet like seeing nature close up. It is the very act of discovering. We want our students to have experiences in science that they will never forget. We are a new public school starting our biology program this year. Having an additional stereomicroscope will make a difference.

We are a small urban school with a diverse student body.

Our school strives to serve our students through a caring staff, exciting education, interesting extracurriculars, and through the cultivation of the habits of heart and mind. The habits of mind are the habit of evidence, connection, perspective, voice, curiosity, responsibility, and creative contribution. Underlying these habits is a commitment to peace, diversity, and growth.

My Project

I believe that understanding science is aided by direct experiences, looking closely, and discovering something new in things you just overlooked. Unlike a compound microscope, a stereomicroscope helps you see things as they are in 3D without any staining or cutting. Even a pinch of salt becomes an amazing array of crystalline blocks. Our hope is to use this microscope to help students in various experiments from forensic Sherlock Holmes style investigations by looking closely at evidence, to looking at biological specimens and tissues to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the delicate and beautiful structures that are there. It is our hope that students will use this equipment for their own personal investigations in ways we could not anticipate. The students will not only gain excitement from these experiences, but they will also appreciate the value of really looking at something and paying attention to details that are clues to understanding.

One of my goals as an educator is to provide students with experiences that expose how beautiful the natural world can be.

It is my hope that this translates into curiosity about the world around around them as well as a respect for it. The projects we hope the stereomicroscope will make possible will align with this aim, not just to know science but also to care.
